Girls Soccer Highlights

The Galway Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to Hoosick Falls on Friday evening for a non-league matchup to close out their regular season. The game quickly turned into a mud-soaked battle; the Golden Eagles showed some grit to pull off a hard-fought 2-1 victory. Just before the field completely deteriorated, Rookie Bella Douglas gave the Eagles something to celebrate. She scored her first career goal off an assist from Sophomore Josie Price. Galway’s backline stood firm for the rest of the half, keeping things clean on the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The second half turned into an absolute washout; what was once grass was now mud. Hoosic Falls managed to soil Galway's clean sheet after a scramble in the mud pit in front of the net, where a loose ball trickled past the goal line by mere centimeters despite a heroic effort to clear it out. But when conditions got messy, goalkeeper Lily Bain truly shone in the muck, racking up 7 big saves to keep the Panthers from pulling ahead. When it rains, it Bains! Undeterred by the swamp beneath their feet, the Eagles dragged themselves through the sludge and refused to settle for the draw. The game-winning sequence was poetry in the mud. Bella Douglas played a quick pass through the midfield to Olivia Davison-Gauss, who threaded a beautiful through ball, cutting through the slush to send Norah Schaperjahn home free. Schaperjahn kept her footing and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to put the game away.  It was an all-around dirty work effort to close out the regular season on a high note. With the win, the girls improve to 10-5, reaching double-digit wins for the first time since 2017.  The Golden Eagles will wash off the mud as they set their sights on a round-one victory later this week, when the team opens Sectionals play.
