INFORMATION & HAPPENINGS

Cows kick unexpectedly and, unlike the kind of kicks horses do, kicking back, cows kick to the side, too, and the front. It can be a light kick in your general direction if the cow is feeling inconvenienced. Make sure to stay where the cow can see you to avoid a harder kick.

Fun fact of the day: When you're reading, even silently, the muscles of your mouth, tongue, and larynx activate. This process is called 'subvocalisation'. We're essentially still sounding out the words in our heads to decode them, even when we're not speaking them out loud.

Did you know? Pele is the only soccer player to ever be a part of three different World Cup-winning teams.

On this date in sports:
  • In 1869, the first professional baseball exhibition game was played between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Cincinnati Amateurs.
  • In 1903, the New York Highlanders (Yankees) won their first game; they beat the Washington Senators, 7-2 at American League Park.
  • In 1914, the MLB Chicago Federals hosted the Kansas City Packers in the 1st game played at Weeghman Park (now Wrigley Field).
  • In 1939, Ted Williams hit his 1st Major League home run while playing for the Boston Red Sox.
  • In 1954, Hammerin' Hank Aaron hit the first of his 755 homers.
  • In 1962, the New York Mets won their 1st game ever, after starting the season with nine losses, beating the Pirates 9-1.

Today is National Picnic Day!!!!

On this date in history:
  • In 2021, shortly after launch, astronauts in a SpaceX capsule headed to the International Space Station were told to put on their spacesuits as a precaution against a possible collision with space debris. (U.S. Space Command, which was responsible for the warning, later claimed it was an error and that the astronauts were never at risk.)
  • In 2005, the first video, showing YouTube cofounder Jawed Karim's visit to the San Diego Zoo, was uploaded to YouTube. Approximately one year later, the site had some 100 million videos.
  • In 1986, the Coca-Cola Company introduced New Coke, a reformulated soft drink meant to replace its flagship beverage and boost sales at the expense of its rival Pepsi. Public outrage ensued, however, and even the company's own bottlers rebelled. Just 79 days later, old Coke, now called Coca-Cola Classic, went back on sale. New Coke was discontinued in 2002.
  • In 1635, the Boston Grammar School (later the Boston Latin School), which opened to all boys regardless of social class, was founded as the first public school in what would become the United States; it set a precedent for tax-supported public education.
