Happy Tuesday, Eagle Nation!  Only two more wake-ups till break. Greet Tuesdays with positivity and determination.  It is looking like a washout today, but at least it is not freezing, and it is not snowing.  There are only three days till Spring Break.  We can make it Eagle Nation!!!  Reminder that Spring Sport stores close this week, so get your orders in ASAP!

Vote for the girls’ sports Athlete of the Week

Galway has two athletes nominated for Athlete of the Week by the Times Union.  Emma Menge, who threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts on Friday, and Kiera Allen, who went 2 for 3 on Friday with a three-run home run.  Make sure you go vote for one of them.

  • In 1906, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States was founded to set rules in amateur sports; it became the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1910.
  • In 1909, the National Baseball Commission ruled that players who jumped contracts would be suspended for 5 years; players who joined outlaw organizations would be suspended for 3 years.
  • In 1923, the first dance marathon in New York City, Alma Cummings set a record of 27 hours with 6 different partners.
  • In 1996, for the first time in MLB history, the regular season opened in March, with the Seattle Mariners beating the Chicago White Sox, 3-2 in 12 innings at the Kingdome in Seattle.

  • In 1992, the USS Missouri, site of the Japanese surrender in 1945, formally ending World War II, was decommissioned for a second and final time; it was the last U.S. battleship still in service.
  • In 1980, American track-and-field legend Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, died at age 66.
  • In 1968, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson ended a televised speech about the Vietnam War by announcing that he would not seek reelection, stunning viewers.
  • 1943, Oklahoma! debuted on Broadway. The first of 11 musicals written by the iconic team of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! launched a golden age of American musical comedy that lasted through the 1950s.
  •  In 1918, Pres. Woodrow Wilson's Standard Time Act went into effect, which advanced clocks by an hour. Also called “wartime” because of its implementation during World War I, the time change was designed to conserve fuel by reducing the need for artificial light. However, daylight saving was largely unpopular; groups that rose early, such as farmers, were its harshest critics.
