Girls Soccer Highlights

Under the lights and in front of a packed homecoming crowd, the Galway Golden Eagles and Mayfield Panthers delivered a game to remember.

After a scoreless first half, Galway struck first when Olivia Davison-Gauss set up Brielle Cameron for the breakthrough goal. But in the closing minutes of regulation, Mayfield’s Ava Vannostrand answered with a beautiful left-footed one-touch finish to force “Golden Goal” overtime. The Golden Eagles would once again find themselves in overtime on homecoming night.

This time, the Eagles made sure the story ended differently. With less than 10 seconds on the clock, Norah Schaperjahn played a deep ball out to the corner. Brielle Cameron found another gear, got to the ball, and ripped a high-arching shot from out wide. The ball would tip off the keeper’s gloves before dropping into the net as the buzzer sounded.

It was a true storybook finish, as Galway walked away with a 2–1 homecoming victory.  Defensively, the Eagles were able to hold an offensively sound Mayfield team to one goal. Norah Schaperjahn was an engine all night for the team. The back line of Kaylee Jessop, Mae Budris, Nadia LaBate, and Lilly Jessop didn’t let up.  Senior Keeper, Beena McElhinney, made 15 saves to keep the team alive.

The non-league win moves the girls to 5-2 overall. Congratulations to the team!

Boys Soccer Highlights

Galway got a decisive win on Homecoming night, 8-0. Both teams played hard and competitively. It was 1-0 going into half, but Galway pulled away in the second half. Shots on goal were 29-7, and corners were 5-1 in favor of Galway. Galway's goal scorers were Jameson Wagner with 4 and Gabe Aldrich with 3. The 8th goal was an own goal by Hadley. Galway had assists from Hayden Flint, Liam Hickey, Rosco Fingar Jr., and Jameson Wagner had 2

  • The modified boys team lost their first game Saturday morning for homecoming against an undefeated Mayfield team. The game was held scoreless for most of the first half before Mayfield scored. The team responded quickly, with Isaac Schaperjahn scoring early in the third quarter to even the match. Mayfield scored the go-ahead goal on a corner kick at the end of the third.
The team had a few good opportunities in the fourth, seeing the ball land just wide of the goal. The team drops to 4-1 and travels to Cobleskill on Tuesday for their next contest.
